Novum Testamentum Graece [Greek New Testament - Preceding Nestle-Aland editions]
Leipzig, Germany: J.C. Hinrichs Bibliopola, 1877.
BUILDING THE MODERN NEW TESTAMENT.
An 1877 edition of Constantin von Tischendorf's Greek New Testament, presenting his Editio critica minor, derived from the eighth major critical edition that represented the culmination of his work on the New Testament text. The volume belongs to the nineteenth-century development of modern biblical textual criticism, when scholars increasingly reconstructed the Greek text through systematic comparison of early manuscripts and variant readings rather than relying primarily upon the received printed tradition. The 1877 Hinrichs edition is bibliographically recorded as the Editio critica minor ex VIII. maiore desumpta.
TISCHENDORF'S CRITICAL TEXT.
Tischendorf was among the defining figures of nineteenth-century New Testament textual scholarship, particularly associated with his discovery and publication of Codex Sinaiticus. His eighth critical edition became an important foundation for subsequent scholarly Greek New Testaments. This compact edition brought the results of that larger critical undertaking into a form intended for practical scholarly use.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: A SCHOLAR'S WORKING GREEK TESTAMENT.
Octavo, approximately 6.75 inches tall. Publisher's brown cloth over boards. 1056 pages. Greek New Testament text with critical apparatus recording variant readings and textual evidence. The compact format and extensive apparatus reflect its intended use by theologians, biblical scholars, clergy, and students rather than as a devotional or family Bible. The title-page imprint reads Lipsiae, J. C. Hinrichs Bibliopola, 1877.
CONDITION: Good. Binding remains sound, with the front board somewhat weakly attached. Cloth shows shelf wear and rubbing. Backstrip lacking, exposing the spine beneath while both boards remain present. Text block remains sound. Pages are age-toned with scattered foxing but clean of writing or annotation. An incomplete but usable copy of the binding, with the text itself complete.
TEXTUAL SIGNIFICANCE:
BEFORE NESTLE-ALAND—TISCHENDORF AND THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY GREEK TEXT.
Constantin von Tischendorf occupies a central place in the development of modern New Testament textual criticism. His decades of manuscript research culminated in the eighth major critical edition of the Greek New Testament, issued beginning in 1869. Its extensive critical apparatus brought together manuscript evidence on a scale that made it an important resource for subsequent textual scholarship. Bibliographic records identify the present Editio critica minor specifically as derived from that eighth major edition.
A PREDECESSOR TO THE MODERN CRITICAL NEW TESTAMENT.
The historical interest of the 1877 edition lies partly in its position before the emergence of Eberhard Nestle's Novum Testamentum Graece at the end of the nineteenth century and the later Nestle-Aland tradition. Tischendorf's work was among the major critical texts upon which subsequent editors could draw when comparing competing reconstructions of the Greek New Testament.
