SEVENTEEN DISNEY CLASSICS — ORIGINAL ANIMATION ART, FILM STILLS & BEHIND-THE-SCENES HISTORY

A lavishly produced collection bringing together seventeen classic stories as interpreted by Walt Disney’s animation studio, illustrated with original animation art and stills from the films. Edited by Darlene Geis, the volume combines familiar tales with the visual history of their Disney adaptations.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE FILMS.
The selections range across several decades of Disney animation and include Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, and The Rescuers, among others. Each section supplements the story with information about the production of its animated film, including the artists, voice actors, characters, and development of the adaptation. Contemporary bibliographic descriptions confirm seventeen stories and the behind-the-scenes production material.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Publisher’s red cloth with gilt Disney castle device on the front board and gilt spine titles, in the original pictorial gold-foil dust jacket. Large quarto, approximately 11¼ by 9½ inches. 307 pages. Extensively illustrated throughout in color and black and white with original animation artwork, film stills, character studies, and production material; 228 illustrations, including 201 in full color, with a foldout.

CONDITION: Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket. Binding tight and square, red cloth clean and bright with strong gilt decoration. Interior clean and unmarked; illustrations remain bright and fresh.

The original metallic gold-foil dust jacket is complete with no tears or chips, but shows noticeable shelf and handling wear, including surface rubbing, scuffing, creasing and pressure marks characteristic of the easily marked foil finish. Despite the handling, the jacket remains bright and presents well.

DISNEY ANIMATION: FROM STORY TO SCREEN—CLASSIC STORIES THROUGH THE DISNEY LENS.
Rather than functioning simply as an anthology of traditional children’s literature, Walt Disney’s Treasury of Children’s Classics presents the stories through their Disney adaptations. The illustrations draw directly upon the studio’s animated productions, visually connecting familiar literary and folk narratives with the characters and imagery through which generations of viewers came to know them.

INSIDE THE ANIMATION STUDIO.
The accompanying production material gives the volume an additional dimension for Disney and animation collectors. Alongside the finished imagery are discussions of the making of the films and information about the artists, performers, characters, production time and costs. The result is part storybook and part accessible history of Disney animation.

A HALF-CENTURY OF DISNEY ANIMATION.
The films represented extend from the studio’s early feature-animation period through The Rescuers (1977), released only a year before this book appeared. Seen together, their artwork provides a visual survey of changing Disney character design, illustration and animation across several generations of studio production.
