Northern France, Belgium, Holland, the Rhine & Meuse [Guide Diamant — Folding Maps & Plans]
Paris: Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1882–1883. Collection des Guides-Joanne, Guides Diamant.
TRAVEL EUROPE AS AN 1880S TOURIST—BY RAIL, WITH THE MAPS, HOTELS AND FARES IN HAND.
A compact Guide Diamant for travel through northern France, Belgium, Holland, and the Rhine and Meuse regions at the beginning of the 1880s, combining detailed itineraries with maps, city plans, practical information, and extensive contemporary advertising.
BUILT FOR THE RAILWAY TRAVELER.
The guide organizes travel around the rapidly developing European railway network. Its opening advertising matter includes reduced-fare circular railway journeys through northern France, Belgium, Holland, and the Rhine, while the text supplies routes, distances, transportation information, hotels, principal sights, and suggested excursions.
THE CONTINENT IN YOUR POCKET.
The volume is especially appealing for its cartographic material, including colored folding plans of Brussels and Antwerp, a folding battlefield plan of Waterloo, and the large 28 × 22 inch folding general map preserved in the rear pocket.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
+++ Publisher's flexible green cloth, blind-stamped decorative borders and central device, front board lettered and decorated in gilt: Guides Diamant / P. Joanne / Belgique / Hachette et Cie.
+++ Small octavo / pocket format, approximately 3.5 × 5.5 inches.
+++ Pagination: 32 pages advertisements; lxiii, [1], 511 pages including index; 72-page 1882–83 advertising appendix.
+++ Text primarily in French, printed in compact double columns. Illustrated with folding maps and plans, including colored folding city plans of Brussels and Antwerp and a folding plan of the battlefield of Waterloo.
+++ Rear pocket contains the large folding Nouvelle Carte Physique et Routière de Belgique et Hollande, approximately 28 × 22 inches, showing Belgium, Holland and surrounding portions of northern France and the Rhine region.
+++ Contemporary advertisements include hotels, transportation services, restaurants, regional products, and railway travel. The opening advertising section includes the Chemin de Fer du Nord, Saison d'Été 1881, promoting reduced-price circular journeys through northern France, Belgium, Holland, and the Rhine.
CONDITION:
+++ Bindings tight and square. Text clean with light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf and handling wear to the green publisher's cloth, with rubbing and loss of color principally along the edges, corners, and spine extremities; gilt cover lettering remains legible.
+++ Folding city plans remain attractive with good color. The large folding map in the rear pocket is present but fragile, with a split beginning at the upper portion of the centerfold seam and weakness at intersecting folds; careful handling is warranted.
+++ Previous owner's name on the front endpaper and a simple pencil doodle on the first blank page.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE — TOURISM ENTERS THE RAILWAY AGE
THE FRENCH ANSWER TO BAEDEKER
The Guides Joanne were among nineteenth-century France's principal travel-guide series. Hachette developed its travel publications alongside the enormous expansion of railway travel, and the compact Guides Diamant provided abbreviated, portable alternatives to the larger Joanne itineraries. The University of Liège describes the Diamant series as intended for travelers and explicitly notes its role in competing with Baedeker's French-language guides.
Paul Joanne succeeded his father Adolphe as director of the Guides Joanne in 1881, placing this edition at the beginning of Paul's stewardship of the series.
TRAVEL BECOMES A SYSTEM.
The guide shows how thoroughly railway transportation was changing European tourism. Routes are constructed around rail connections; stations, hotels, omnibuses, fares, luggage allowances, journey times, and circular tickets become part of the traveler's essential information.
The advertising is therefore more than filler. A Chemin de Fer du Nord advertisement offers month-long circular tickets covering France, Belgium, Holland, and the Rhine, demonstrating how railway companies and guide publishers were turning international travel into something that could be planned, priced, and purchased as an itinerary.
The maps complete that function. Rather than merely describing Brussels, Antwerp, Waterloo, and the broader region, the guide gave travelers portable tools for navigating them.
