Ella Dolbear Lee's substantial collection of traditional Mother Goose melodies, jingles, and rhymes, edited and illustrated by Lee and published in 1918. Familiar verses are presented with abundant line drawings and full-page color illustrations, giving the volume much of its appeal as an example of early twentieth-century American children's book illustration.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: A LARGE, GENEROUSLY ILLUSTRATED MOTHER GOOSE.
Original cloth with a large color pictorial label mounted to the front board depicting Mother Goose surrounded by children and geese. 10 inches tall; [16], 17–280, [2] pages. Illustrated throughout with numerous black-and-white drawings, decorative elements, and full-page color plates. Pictorial endpapers extend the nursery-rhyme imagery across the opening and closing of the volume.
CONDITION: GOOD. Textblock tight and square. Text clean with light, even age-toning and occasional finger spotting. Moderate shelf and handling wear. Front pictorial label remains attractive with light rubbing and wear. Both front and rear hinges have old tape repairs. A small loss is present at the lower corner of the copyright leaf. Illustrations and color plates remain bright and visually appealing.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: THE RHYMES WE REMEMBER.
Unlike anonymously illustrated compilations, this edition is closely identified with Ella Dolbear Lee: her name dominates the cover and she both edited and illustrated the collection. Lee worked in children's publishing and periodical illustration, producing images for fairy tales and children's classics as well as magazines and commercial clients.
