The Tale of Peter Rabbit [In Original Dust Jacket]
New York: Frederick Warne & Co., Inc., [circa 1960s]. Later American printing. Hardcover with Dust Jacket.
PETER RABBIT IN HIS CLASSIC WARNE FORMAT.
A later American printing of Beatrix Potter's best-known tale, retaining the small format, original illustrations, pictorial endpapers, and green binding closely associated with the Warne editions. This copy is particularly appealing for retaining its original pictorial dust jacket with the publisher's $1.50 price intact.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: THE TRADITIONAL LITTLE PETER RABBIT BOOK.
Small hardcover, 4.25 by 5.5 inches; 8–58, [1] pages. Green paper-covered boards with white lettering and mounted color illustration of Peter Rabbit to the front board. Illustrated throughout in color by Beatrix Potter. Pictorial endpapers reproduce characters from the Peter Rabbit books.
Original pictorial dust jacket repeats the Peter Rabbit cover design. Front flap retains the publisher's $1.50 price. Rear jacket panel lists the original Peter Rabbit books together with French editions; rear flap advertises translations in German, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Welsh, and Latin.
CONDITION: VERY GOOD IN A GOOD DUST JACKET.
Binding tight and square. Text clean with light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf and handling wear. Green boards remain attractive with light wear at corners and spine extremities. Later American printing.
Dust jacket shows shelf and edge wear with chips and short tears, particularly at the spine ends and corners. Lower corner of the front flap has been clipped, but the publisher's $1.50 price remains intact at the upper corner. Interior of jacket shows an old tape repair with associated staining.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: THE LITTLE BOOK THAT BECAME A CLASSIC.
First commercially published by Frederick Warne in 1902, The Tale of Peter Rabbit became the foundation of Beatrix Potter's series of small-format children's books. Potter's combination of concise storytelling, carefully observed animal characters, and her own watercolor illustrations established a format that Warne retained through generations of subsequent editions.
A DESIGN THAT ENDURED.
This later American printing demonstrates the remarkable continuity of the Peter Rabbit books. The small scale, green binding, pictorial cover, illustrated endpapers, and Potter's original pictures preserved an immediately recognizable identity long after the book's first appearance.
