A compact English-language visitor's guide to postwar Paris and its environs, organized around excursions through the city and accompanied by photographs, neighborhood diagrams, transportation information, and tourist guidance.

The particular appeal is the large folding color map, opening to approximately 28 by 24 inches. One side presents a detailed street plan of Paris with Métro routes; the reverse offers a brightly colored pictorial plan identifying monuments and major landmarks.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: A POCKET GUIDE WITH A FULL-SCALE CITY MAP.
Laminated pictorial wraps with Eiffel Tower cover photograph. 4.75 by 6 inches; 76 pages. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs, diagrams, excursion maps, and architectural vignettes.

A color Métro plan appears on the rear cover. Bound at the rear is a large two-sided folding color map opening to approximately 28 by 24 inches. One side is a detailed Plan de Paris avec indication du Métropolitain; the reverse is the more graphic Nouveau Plan Paris Monumental, with illustrated landmarks distributed throughout the city.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and square; text clean with light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear to the laminated wraps, with rubbing and edge wear.

The large folding map remains complete and bright. One fold seam has a tear extending upward from the lower edge; otherwise showing expected handling along the folds.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: PARIS FOR THE POSTWAR TOURIST.
Pocket guides of this kind document the infrastructure of modern tourism as much as the monuments themselves. Here Paris is presented as a city to be actively navigated: Métro lines, walking excursions, restaurants, tea rooms, museums, neighborhoods, and destinations beyond the center are integrated into a portable guide.

THE MAP IS THE SURVIVOR.
The oversized folding map gives the guide considerably more interest today. Its reverse Paris Monumental side transforms the working street map into an appealing pictorial view of the city, locating the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Sacré-Cœur, Arc de Triomphe, Notre-Dame and numerous lesser landmarks within the urban plan.
