HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: GEORGE SAND, CHOPIN AND THE ROMANTIC CIRCLE RECREATED FOR THE SCREEN.
Released in 1991 and directed by James Lapine from a screenplay by Sarah Kernochan, Impromptu dramatizes the relationship between George Sand and Frédéric Chopin against a deliberately crowded portrait of nineteenth-century European artistic society. Its characters include Franz Liszt, Marie d'Agoult, Alfred de Musset and Eugène Delacroix.

The stills are particularly effective as a group because the publicity series documents the film's ensemble rather than merely its leading couple. They also capture Hugh Grant in an early starring film role, opposite an established international cast led by Judy Davis.
