A WORKING NAVIGATIONAL CHART OF NORWAY'S ISLAND-STUDDED WESTERN COAST.
Large Norwegian government nautical chart covering the coast from Haastenen to Lille Batalden, including the waters around Florø and the intricate network of islands, sounds, channels and skerries characteristic of western Norway.

Designed for practical coastal navigation, the chart combines dense depth soundings with lights, channels, hazards, coastal settlements and navigational marks. An inset extends the coverage, while manuscript courses and calculations provide evidence of working use.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: A 39-INCH HYDROGRAPHIC CHART WITH AN INSET AND DENSE COASTAL DETAIL.
+++ Single sheet, approximately 28 by 39 inches, printed recto only on light cardstock. Norwegian Nautical Chart No. 26. Scale 1:50,000. Printed principally in black and green with navigational information and corrections in additional colors.
+++ Title block records Oslo 1954 (1873), hydrographic surveying 1868–73, and Cassini projection. Lower margin records Trykt 12/1959; correction stamp records Rettet til: 1 MAI 1960. Norwegian authorities explain that the lower chart frame records printing and correction information used to establish a paper chart's currency.
+++ Extensive hydrographic detail includes depth soundings in fathoms, islands, skerries, channels, lights, navigational hazards and coastal features. An inset chart occupies the upper left. The principal chart includes Florø and surrounding islands and waterways.
+++ Blank verso bears manuscript No. 26, the title Fra Haastenen til Lille Batalden, and additional later identification.
+++ Manuscript pencil courses, calculations and other navigational notations appear within the chart, providing evidence of practical use rather than purely decorative or reference preservation.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD; VERSO STAIN DOES NOT AFFECT THE PRINTED MAP.
+++ Sheet remains sound with light handling and age wear. A conspicuous tan stain with a darker central spot appears on the blank verso but does not affect or show through to the printed chart face.
+++ Blank verso additionally shows light soiling, scattered minor marks and manuscript identification. Printed chart remains strong and readily legible.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE — FROM NINETEENTH-CENTURY SURVEY TO TWENTIETH-CENTURY NAVIGATION.
The underlying chart belongs to the nineteenth-century hydrographic mapping of Norway's western coast. Kartverket's historical collection records the corresponding Specialkart over Den Norske Kyst fra Haastenen til Lille Batalden in 1873 at the same 1:50,000 scale.

A COASTAL SURVEY STILL SERVING MARINERS NEARLY A CENTURY LATER.
This 1959 printing demonstrates the continuing practical life of that hydrographic work. The chart was revised for twentieth-century navigation and corrected through May 1960, while retaining the underlying 1868–73 survey history. The working annotations on this copy further document its use as a navigational object.
