PAUL EHRLICH AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF MODERN HEMATOLOGY. 
A substantial early twentieth-century treatise on diseases of the blood, bringing into English important German work by Paul Ehrlich, Adolf Lazarus, Carl von Noorden, and Felix Pinkus. The volume treats normal and pathological blood histology, anemia, chlorosis, and lymphatic and myeloid leukemia, with particular attention to the microscopic differentiation of blood cells.

The American edition was edited and augmented by Alfred Stengel, Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Stengel's preface explains that the German authors were consulted concerning the English edition and that the American editors were asked to bring the articles up to date and adapt them for English-language readers.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and square; text clean with light, even age-toning. Light shelf-handling wear, with rubbing and light wear at the spine ends and tips and a slight longitudinal crease to the spine. Small light spot to the upper front board. Gilt remains clear and attractive. Plates and illustrations remain well preserved.

SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: BLOOD CELLS BECOME DIAGNOSTIC EVIDENCE. 
Diseases of the Blood appeared during a formative period in hematology, when advances in microscopy and staining techniques were transforming the classification of blood cells and the diagnosis of blood disorders. The text explicitly discusses the differentiation of leukocytes through stained preparations and the classification associated with Ehrlich.

Paul Ehrlich was central to this transformation. His investigations of selective staining and blood-cell morphology helped establish methods by which different leukocyte populations could be distinguished microscopically. This volume brought Ehrlich and his German colleagues' work on blood morphology and disease to an American medical readership in a substantial English-language clinical reference.

FROM GERMAN RESEARCH TO AMERICAN MEDICINE:
The book also documents the international movement of medical knowledge at the beginning of the twentieth century. Rather than simply reprinting a translation, the American Nothnagel series employed specialists to edit and supplement the German articles for English-speaking physicians. Stengel's 1905 preface specifically describes that editorial process, while contemporary medical publishing records list the volume as a 714-page illustrated treatment of anemia, chlorosis, leukemia, and related blood diseases.
