THE AMERICAN WEST FROM A TRAIN WINDOW — 1926
Chapman, Arthur (1873–1935)

The Route of the Rio Grande [1926 Illustrated Railroad Travel Brochure]

Denver, Colorado: Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, Passenger Department, 1926.

THE SCENIC LINE OF THE WORLD — A JOURNEY THROUGH THE ROCKIES.

An illustrated 1926 promotional booklet presenting the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad as a gateway to the mountains, canyons, and national parks of the American West.

Written by journalist and poet Arthur Chapman, author of 'Out Where the West Begins', the text combines descriptions of railroad travel with the romantic imagery of the Western landscape. Rather than offering schedules and fares, Chapman presents the journey itself as an attraction, emphasizing the railroad's passage through mountain scenery and its connections to celebrated destinations.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Bindings are tight and square. Text is clean, with light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf and handling wear, including a bumped front corner. A pale tide mark is visible at the lower spine corner, extending lightly through the booklet. The illustrated wrappers retain their color and definition.

A FLORIDA BANKING ASSOCIATION.
A faint institutional stamp of the Florida National Bank, American Express Service, Jacksonville, Florida, appears across the upper illustration on the front wrapper.

The stamp documents the booklet's association with a Jacksonville banking institution offering American Express services. It is an interesting commercial-use detail, although it does not establish the circumstances of the booklet's distribution or ownership.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: SELLING THE SCENIC AMERICAN WEST—RAILROAD TRAVEL AS A TOURIST EXPERIENCE.
By the 1920s, Western railroads were competing not simply on transportation but on the experiences their routes offered. The Denver & Rio Grande Western emphasized the dramatic landscapes accessible from its trains, promoting the Royal Gorge, mountain passes, national parks, and historic settlements as reasons to choose its passenger service.

ARTHUR CHAPMAN AND THE ROMANCE OF THE WEST.
Arthur Chapman was a journalist and poet whose Out Where the West Begins became closely associated with popular conceptions of Western hospitality and character. His contribution gives the publication a literary dimension beyond conventional railroad advertising.

Chapman's prose presents the mountains, canyons, forests, and historic communities as an unfolding spectacle viewed from the train. The inclusion of his celebrated poem reinforces the railroad's identification with the romance of the American West.

THE RAILROAD'S VISUAL IDENTITY.
The combination of decorative typography, tinted photographic views, and stylized mountain illustrations demonstrates the sophistication of railroad promotional printing during the interwar period. The booklet documents how scenery, recreation, and regional identity were used to market passenger travel.
