Joe Haldeman, later acclaimed for The Forever War (1974, Hugo and Nebula Awards), wrote the Attar the Merman books early in his career under the name Robert Graham.

These novels combined Cold War thriller elements with ecological and evolutionary themes, anticipating later environmental science fiction. War of Nerves pits Attar against a villain threatening to unleash nerve gas across the Caribbean. The cover artist, Plourde, contributed stylized figure work to Pocket Books during the early 1970s.
