A Treatise on Physiology and Hygiene for Educational Institutions and General Readers [Victorian Health Education]
New York: Clark & Maynard, Publishers, [1884].
THE VICTORIAN BODY — ANATOMY, EXERCISE, HYGIENE, AND TEMPERANCE
An illustrated nineteenth-century physiology textbook presenting the human body not simply as anatomy, but as something whose health could be improved through exercise, diet, cleanliness, and personal habits. Written by physician Joseph C. Hutchison for schools and general readers, the volume reflects the growing place of physiology and hygiene in American education during the later nineteenth century.
VICTORIAN HEALTH EDUCATION.
Hutchison moves systematically through the body's structure and functions, with chapters devoted to the skeleton, muscles, digestion, circulation, respiration, nervous system, senses, and related subjects. Numerous illustrations translate anatomical concepts for the student, ranging from skeletal and dental anatomy to demonstrations of physical exercise. The work had a substantial educational life: earlier editions appeared during the 1870s, and the 1884 edition is independently recorded by OCLC.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Publisher's green cloth decorated in black with geometric and ornamental patterns, front cover titled in black, spine lettered in gilt. Publisher's advertisements on the endpapers. Octavo, approximately 7.5 inches tall. 276 pages, including index, followed by a separately paginated 15-page supplement, “Supplement to Hutchison's Physiology and Hygiene: Stimulants and Narcotics.” Illustrated throughout with anatomical and instructional engravings, with a color anatomical frontispiece, The Viscera in Position. Later edition, copyright 1875.
TEMPERANCE IN THE 1880s CLASSROOM.
This copy retains the 15-page supplement on stimulants and narcotics, extending the conventional anatomical text into contemporary instruction concerning alcohol and other substances. The supplement begins with alcohol and its history and chemistry before addressing its physiological consequences and belongs to the increasingly important temperance component of late nineteenth-century school health instruction.
CONDITION: Vey Good. The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean; light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. Period pencil notation and marks to the front advertising leaf. A sound, complete working copy.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE — TEACHING THE BODY.
By the late nineteenth century, physiology and hygiene had become increasingly important components of American education, bringing basic anatomical and medical knowledge into the classroom. Hutchison's Treatise on Physiology and Hygiene reflects this movement, combining conventional instruction in the structure and functions of the human body with practical guidance concerning exercise, diet, cleanliness, and personal health.
THE BODY EXPLAINED.
The illustrations are particularly revealing of the period's approach to health education. Anatomical diagrams appear alongside images demonstrating physical exercises, presenting the body as something students could both understand scientifically and improve through disciplined habits.
TEMPERANCE IN THE 1880s.
The separately paginated supplement on Stimulants and Narcotics adds another distinctly nineteenth-century dimension. Its discussion of alcohol places the volume within the growing temperance influence on American health education, when instruction concerning intoxicants was increasingly incorporated into school physiology curricula.
