Madrid: Folding Tourist Map and City Plan [With Metro, Road & Transit Maps] [c1960]

MADRID IN EIGHT PANELS.
A colorful mid-century folding tourist map designed to place the Spanish capital in a visitor's pocket. Opening from a narrow illustrated wrapper, it expands into a substantial street plan of Madrid with numbered tourist locations and additional maps showing the Metro, trolleybus and tram routes, and principal roads leading from the city.

The combination of transportation information, tourist landmarks, useful addresses, and road connections makes this both a working map and an attractive record of Madrid tourism before digital navigation.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: FROM POCKET SIZE TO CITY PLAN.
Folding map in eight panels, measuring approximately 4 by 9 inches closed and opening to approximately 15.75 by 17.75 inches.Printed in Spain.

The principal side presents a large color street plan of Madrid with tourist locations numbered and keyed along the margin. Additional panels include Outlets from Madrid by Road, a Metro plan, trolleybus and tram routes, useful addresses and telephone numbers, and a photographic and graphic panel centered on the Plaza Mayor.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Carefully handled. Printing remains clean and colors bright. Folds are sound without significant splitting or separation. Light handling wear to the exterior panels and edges.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: NAVIGATING MID-CENTURY MADRID.
More than a street map, this was a compact navigation system for the visitor to Madrid. It combines the city's monuments and tourist destinations with the practical infrastructure needed to move through and beyond it: Metro, trolleybus and tram lines, arterial roads, gasoline stations, tourist offices, airlines, automobile clubs, emergency services and other useful addresses.

THE CITY BEFORE GPS.
The surviving transportation information gives the map particular period interest. It records Madrid as travelers actually encountered it—not simply as a collection of monuments, but as a network of streets, transit systems and roads leading outward toward Toledo, Burgos, Irún, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Valencia and Alicante.
